The Artisan's Journey: Leatherhard Stage
In our journey of creating pottery, the crafting process is a meticulous dance of time and skill. As our formed pieces gently dry over several days, they enter the 'leatherhard' stage. At this point, the clay loses moisture through evaporation, becoming stiff and less pliable. It's a pivotal juncture, allowing for the final touches—carving away excess clay, adding handles or intricate embellishments, or refining the footring of a bowl. This is the last opportunity to shape the piece, for once the clay has passed beyond this point, it stands firm, and no further changes can be made.
