Ceramics, an ancient craft dating back to the earliest days of human industry, possesses inherent artistic qualities that elevate it to the status of art even in its nascent stages. The rich cultural tapestry of the lands encompassing Bulgaria, once inhabited by various tribes and peoples such as Thracians, Romans, Slavs, and Proto-Bulgarians, has bequeathed a diverse ceramic heritage over the ages. The proximity to the Mediterranean, with its vibrant culture, has significantly shaped the evolution of Bulgarian crafts.
At DankoHandmade, we honor this legacy by infusing tradition with a modern perspective. Each of our distinctive product lines embodies its own unique style and character, yet all share the comforting warmth derived from the Bulgarian soil.
The Ceramics-Making Process:
(Explore our shop for insights into other stages of ceramics production)
Upon drying to greenware, a clay piece undergoes the first firing, known as bisque firing. This process, reaching temperatures around 1800 degrees F (980 degrees C), imparts durability to the ware, facilitating easier handling during glazing. The porous nature of the clay at this stage aids in absorbing glaze liquids. As the kiln gradually warms, firing too quickly could result in catastrophic breakage, emphasizing the need for a controlled approach. After reaching the target temperature, the kiln is allowed to cool slowly, ensuring a successful bisque firing. The final step involves opening the kiln, revealing the prepared bisque ware, ready for the enchantment of glazing.
