Cultural Influence on DankoHandmade:
The Balkan Peninsula is a melting pot of civilizations, where the rich tapestry of Thracians, Greeks, Slavs, Turks, and Proto-Bulgarians interweaves to shape what we know as Bulgarian culture. Even today, the people in these lands continue to uphold traditions and customs from ancient times, singing songs, dancing, and weaving motifs, often without realizing the profound historical origins. It's as if these traditions are ingrained in the very essence of the land and its people, handed down through generations, an integral part of their identity.
This deep-rooted cultural influence is vividly reflected in the products of DankoHandmade. Our creations bear the vibrant colors of Bulgarian national costumes, embody traditional shapes and ornaments, and epitomize functionality. For two decades, our workshop has dedicated itself to preserving and revitalizing this heritage, infusing it with a contemporary twist, thus bridging the gap between old-world charm and modern design.
Journey Through the Pottery-Making Process:
1. Firing - The Alchemy of Transformation
The transition from humble, soft clay to durable ceramics is nothing short of alchemy. Pottery pieces have withstood the test of time for millennia, thanks to the union of clay and fire. Firing clay is the transformative stage where clay and glazes are subjected to high temperatures.
The ultimate goal is to achieve the 'maturity' of clay and glazes, a molecular transformation that endows pottery with strength and resilience. Bisque firing is the initial step, designed to vitrify the clay pots to a point where they can withstand subsequent glazing, without becoming overly vitrified.
After the application of glazes and proper drying, the pots are carefully arranged in the kiln for the final glaze firing. Precision is paramount as the pots mustn't touch; otherwise, the glazes may fuse them together. The kiln undergoes a gradual heating process, reaching the pinnacle of temperature to attain the desired 'maturity' of clay and glazes. It is only after the kiln has cooled that the magic of creation unfolds, revealing unique pieces that capture the essence of tradition and craftsmanship.
At DankoHandmade, we invite you to explore the marriage of culture and artistry through every step of our pottery-making process. Join us on this journey of transformation, where history meets innovation, and the past intertwines with the present, producing timeless pieces that connect generations and cultures
