The Balkan Peninsula stands as a crossroads of civilizations, where Thracians, Greeks, Slavs, Turks, and Proto-Bulgarians have left an indelible mark on what we now recognize as Bulgarian culture. Deeply rooted in these lands, people continue to uphold the traditions and customs of ancient times, singing songs, dancing, and weaving motifs, often unaware of the historical tapestry they perpetuate. Even subconsciously, we carry forward the age-old traditions of our ancestors.
This rich cultural tapestry finds expression in the creations of DankoHandmade. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant colors of Bulgarian national costumes, traditional shapes, and intricate ornaments, our workshop has dedicated the past two decades to preserving and evolving this cultural legacy in a modern context.
The Creative Process:

Throwing clay is a meticulous process that involves utilizing a swiftly rotating pottery wheel and various tools to shape a mound of clay into a captivating ceramic piece. The intricate procedure begins by placing a lump of clay precisely in the center of the wheel head, crafting an opening at the exact center. Gradually expanding the opening and pulling up the sides, a cylinder takes shape. A sufficient amount of clay is retained for the base. The sides and mouth of the piece are meticulously shaped, and once it reaches the leather-hard stage, the potter proceeds to trim excess clay, add handles, spouts, or attachments, and carve, cut, or reshape the piece. While an experienced potter may make this process appear effortless, it demands years of dedication and extensive practice to master the art of throwing, creating balanced and aesthetically pleasing pieces.
