Ceramics, among the earliest industrial pursuits of humanity, possesses inherent artistic qualities, evolving into an esteemed art form from its nascent stages. The diverse tribes and civilizations that once inhabited Bulgaria contributed significantly to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Thracians, Romans, Slavs, and Proto-Bulgarians have all left their mark through various ceramic styles. Influenced by the proximity to the Mediterranean's vibrant culture, Bulgarian crafts flourished over time.
At DankoHandmade, we honor these traditions by infusing them with a modern twist. Each product line exudes its distinct style and character, yet all convey the comforting warmth rooted in the Bulgarian soil.

The transformation of soft clay into durable ceramics occurs through the firing process. This technique imparts toughness and strength to the material, resembling certain aspects of stone. Pieces of pottery, lasting for millennia, owe their resilience to the union of clay and fire.
The initial high-temperature firing, known as bisque firing, vitrifies the clay pots enough to withstand subsequent glazing without compromising their integrity. The objective is to reach an optimal melting point, ensuring the clay and glazes mature harmoniously at a molecular level. This process prepares the pots for the application of glazes, a crucial step in the intricate journey of ceramics.
After the meticulous application and drying of glazes on the bisqueware, the pots are gingerly loaded into the kiln for the glaze firing. Precision is paramount to prevent pots from touching, as any contact could lead to the melting and fusion of glazes. The kiln undergoes a gradual heating process to bring both clay and glazes to maturity before a meticulous cooling phase. Only after this careful process does the kiln unveil its creations, ready to be appreciated and enjoyed.
