Stoneware, a dense and nonporous form of pottery, undergoes a high-temperature firing process, setting it apart as a durable and scratch-resistant material. Notably distinct from porcelain, stoneware possesses a more opaque quality.
At DankoHandmade, we prioritize excellence in craftsmanship, subjecting our stoneware pottery to a meticulous dual firing process. The first firing, known as bisque firing, reaches temperatures around 900 °C, while the subsequent glost firing, responsible for forming the glaze, peaks at 1200 °C. This double-firing technique ensures a superior glaze finish, enhancing the aesthetic and functional qualities of each piece.
Stoneware's water absorption rate remains impressively low, measuring below 1 percent. This characteristic not only contributes to its resilience but also renders our products safe for dishwasher use, even with intensive cleaning programs.
The Process Unveiled:
DRYING:
The journey of crafting stoneware begins with the unveiling of the clay, initiating the drying process. As the clay loses moisture, it undergoes a transformation, becoming stiffer, and shrinkage becomes apparent. Post-formation, whether through throwing or alternative methods, each piece is carefully wrapped in plastic sheets without holes. This deliberate measure moderates the drying pace, ensuring workability even after several days. Controlled drying prevents undesirable cracks, enabling our artisans to continue their creative process seamlessly.
