Stoneware is a nonporous, nontranslucent pottery, that is fired at a high temperature. It is hard enough to resist scratching but differs from porcelain because it is more opaque.
In DankoHandmade we fire stoneware pottery twice to produce a better-quality glaze finish. Bisque firing is around 900 Β°C, and glost firing (the firing used to form the glaze over the ware) - 1200 Β°C. Water absorption of stoneware products is less than 1 percent, which makes them safe to use in a dishwasher even with intensive programs.

Pottery and ceramics have deeply rooted themselves in human culture, spanning millennia and touching diverse facets of our lives. From ancient storage vessels to spacecraft components, these art forms have been indispensable in countless human endeavors.

The Process:
(Discover more about the ceramics-making process in our shop).

Throwing clay is an intricate craft involving a swiftly spinning pottery wheel and specialized tools to transform raw clay into exquisite ceramic pieces.
The journey begins by centering a lump of clay precisely on the wheel head, then skillfully crafting an opening in its heart. Gradually, the opening expands, and the sides rise, forming a cylindrical shape. Leaving ample clay at the base, the potter sculpts the sides and mouth of the vessel before gently removing it from the wheel.
As the piece dries to a leathery texture, the potter meticulously trims away excess clay, adding handles, spouts, or decorative elements. This stage demands precision and patience, honed over years of dedicated practice.
While seasoned potters make the process seem effortless, mastering throwing requires unwavering commitment and countless hours of practice to fashion balanced, visually captivating creations.
