Bisque Firing:
Once a clay piece transforms into greenware, it embarks on a crucial journey through the kiln for the initial firing. Temperatures soar to approximately 1800 degrees F (980 degrees C), fortifying the ware and ensuring its resilience during the subsequent glazing phase. At this stage, the clay retains its porosity, defining its ability to absorb liquids.
The bisque firing serves a pivotal purpose—making the glazing process smoother. The porous bisque ware absorbs the water content of the glaze, leaving behind the glassy materials on the surface. To initiate this process, the kiln is carefully loaded with dry greenware and programmed for a gradual warming. Swift firing in the early stages could lead to explosive outcomes.
As the kiln ascends in temperature, reaching the targeted degree, it is then methodically turned off and allowed to cool gradually. The culmination unfolds as the kiln door opens, revealing the transformed bisque ware—now primed and prepared for the next artistic chapter, the enchanting world of glazing.
