BISQUE FIRING - The Art of Preparing for Brilliance

Once our clay creations have transformed into greenware, they embark on the transformative journey of bisque firing, the crucial first step in our ceramic crafting process. Here, we share a glimpse into this intriguing phase of pottery making.

What is Bisque Firing?
Bisque firing is a delicate dance between art and science, as our clay pieces are loaded into the kiln, taking their first step toward becoming enduring works of art. The kiln temperature reaches approximately 1800 degrees F (980 degrees C). This firing process endows the ceramics with the durability needed to withstand the forthcoming glazing process. The fired clay, though now resilient, still retains its porosity, which is its ability to absorb liquids.

The Magic of Porosity:
Our ceramics are like sponges, eagerly absorbing water, a vital component of the glazing process. During bisque firing, water soaks into the porous bisque ware, while the glaze's glassy components are left delicately deposited on its surface. This initial firing is akin to laying the foundation for the artwork's final splendor.

The Bisque Firing Journey:
The bisque firing commences with loading the kiln with dry greenware, a process carefully programmed to gently warm the pieces. Firing too rapidly during this initial phase can lead to disastrous outcomes, causing our beloved creations to burst. Slowly and steadily, the kiln temperature ascends until it reaches the precise target temperature.

A Patient Conclusion:
With the target temperature achieved, the kiln's fiery embrace is turned off, and the cooling process begins, deliberately and meticulously. Finally, the kiln door swings open, revealing our bisque ware, now prepared and poised for the next enchanting step: glazing.

We invite you to explore our shop for a deeper understanding of the other stages that complete our ceramics journey, each phase imbued with the care and dedication of a passionate artisan.
