Bisque Firing - Where Clay Comes to Life
Picture the dried clay piece, known as greenware, patiently awaiting its transformation. It is carefully loaded into the kiln for its first of two firings, reaching temperatures of approximately 1800 degrees F (980 degrees C). This firing hardens the clay, rendering it resilient for subsequent processes without fear of breakage. Remarkably, even at this stage, the clay retains its porous nature, akin to an ancient vessel's ability to absorb the essence of its surroundings.
This porosity plays a crucial role during glazing. The glaze, laden with liquid, is absorbed by the porous bisque ware, leaving behind a delicate, glassy veneer. In essence, the bisque firing serves as the foundation upon which we craft the vibrant artistry of our ceramics. The process begins with a gentle warming of the kiln to safeguard the work from any premature explosive transformations. Gradually, the temperature ascends to its target, and then the kiln is hushed, left to cool slowly. In the end, the kiln unveils its treasures, and the bisque ware is born anew, primed and ready for the enchantment of glazing.
