Stoneware, a resilient and nonporous form of pottery, undergoes a high-temperature firing process that sets it apart from other ceramic materials. Its durability, resistance to scratching, and distinct opacity distinguish it from porcelain.
At DankoHandmade, we uphold the tradition of stoneware craftsmanship by subjecting our creations to a meticulous two-step firing process. First, the bisque firing raises the temperature to around 900°C, setting the stage for the subsequent transformation. The glaze firing, the crucial second step, takes place at a range of 1100°C to 1280°C. This controlled heat application melds the glaze seamlessly onto the pottery, ensuring both beauty and durability.
One remarkable quality of stoneware is its minimal water absorption, measuring less than 1 percent. This property makes it perfectly safe for the rigors of dishwasher use, even on intensive cleaning cycles.
The Firing Process:
GLAZE FIRING
The glaze firing is the pivotal second act in the creation of stoneware. Once the glazes have been meticulously applied to the bisqueware and allowed to dry, each piece is carefully positioned in the kiln. This firing stage requires precision, with temperatures ranging from 1100°C to 1280°C (2020°F to 2350°F), depending on the specific materials used.
Notably, during this process, the pots must not come into contact with one another. Even a slight touch could cause the glazes to merge, leading to an undesirable fusion. The kiln's heat is skillfully regulated, gradually reaching the ideal temperature to mature both the clay and glazes. It is then slowly cooled. Only after this cooling phase concludes is the kiln carefully opened and its precious contents unloaded. This final step marks the culmination of the journey for the vast majority of stoneware pieces.
